To the south of Lecce amongst the towns of the Grecia Salenta is Sternatia. Originally established during the Greek settlement of the area, the culture of the founders continues to this day.
Sternatia is one of the few places where all generations continue to speak the 'Griko' dialect, with no sign of it dying out.
The Convento dei Domenicani is no longer a convent and houses the city council, but has a magnificent doorway and several impressive balconies. Near Porta Filia there is access to underneath the town, where there are a series of tunnels and galleries leading to oil presses.
